My name is Raquel Bautista, and I am a bedside nurse at AdventHealth in Ocala, Florida. My role primarily involves providing post-operative care to patients in the orthopedic surgical unit. In addition to my professional responsibilities, I am concurrently pursuing a baccalaureate degree in nursing at the University of Florida. This academic pursuit aims to enhance my clinical proficiencies and expand my knowledge base, ultimately enabling me to offer comprehensive and exemplary patient care.
I am certified in Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS), which are pivotal in ensuring secure and proficient patient care. One of my most gratifying experiences in nursing has been advocating for the needs of homeless patients. I have made a meaningful impact by improving discharge planning and facilitating access to essential resources such as medications and follow-up care.
My nursing practice is built on the pillars of advocacy, empathy, and a commitment to continuous learning. These principles fuel my enthusiasm for advancing both my education and professional trajectory. Beyond my professional and academic pursuits, I find joy in outdoor activities, experimenting with new culinary creations, and cherishing moments with my family. These personal interests not only enrich my life but also contribute to my well-rounded nature, which I believe is essential for providing holistic patient care. Nursing is not just a job for me; it is a vocation to which I am wholeheartedly dedicated. I am determined to continually progress, both personally and professionally, along this path.

Quality Improvement
Quality improvement (QI) activities in healthcare settings are essential for enhancing patient care, optimizing operational processes, and ensuring overall organizational effectiveness. Although I have yet to gain extensive experience leading QI projects, I am committed to actively participating in these initiatives throughout my nursing career. I recently joined the Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) project committee, which officially kicked off this month—marking an important step in my engagement with QI work.
As I continue to grow in this area, I plan to engage in initiatives that aim to improve patient safety, reduce hospital-acquired infections, and enhance care coordination among multidisciplinary teams. One of my first steps will be identifying areas within my unit that would benefit from improvement. For example, I aim to contribute to projects focused on reducing medication errors or improving discharge processes to decrease readmission rates. By collaborating with the nursing leadership team, I will assist in data collection, performance metric analysis, and the implementation of evidence-based interventions.
My participation in these activities will not only support quality care within my unit but also provide meaningful learning opportunities to shape my nursing practice. Over time, I will update my ePortfolio with the progress and outcomes of my contributions to QI initiatives, documenting how these efforts have positively impacted patient outcomes, efficiency, and the overall healthcare environment.
Vision for Growth
I recognize the value of engaging in formal community service activities for both personal and professional growth. As I continue to develop my leadership abilities, I have been serving as a Team Leader/Charge Nurse since January 2025 and was recently appointed as the Unit-Based Council (UBC) Chair for 2025. These roles have deepened my commitment to making a broader impact, both within the hospital and in the community.
I aim to participate in community service initiatives as soon as my schedule permits. I am particularly interested in activities such as health promotion events, volunteer outreach, and wellness screenings, which provide unique opportunities to strengthen leadership skills essential in nursing. I plan to join the current community service initiative offered through AdventHealth Hospital in the near future.
Additionally, volunteering with local organizations that support vulnerable populations—such as shelters or charitable clinics—could expand my understanding of the social determinants of health and reinforce my commitment to advocacy. Collaborating with case managers and social workers in these settings would offer valuable insight into effective interdisciplinary teamwork, a vital aspect of nursing leadership.
These community service opportunities will not only allow me to apply my clinical expertise but also serve as platforms to nurture empathy, resilience, and advocacy—core qualities of an effective nurse leader. I am actively exploring service opportunities in my community and am determined to integrate them into my practice prior to my final portfolio review. This proactive approach will ensure that I gain meaningful experiences that contribute significantly to my leadership journey.
